The UK is set to implement new age verification regulations to prevent minors from accessing adult content online. Here’s what you need to know:
Social Media Platforms Tightening Policies
Many social media platforms are updating their Terms of Service to better manage age restrictions. By enforcing stricter content guidelines, they aim to comply with regulations without implementing separate age verification systems. This means content creators using these platforms may experience stricter enforcement around adult content but won’t need to independently verify user ages.
Age Verification on Clip Stores and Fan Pages
Platforms like OnlyFans and Clips4Sale are integrating age verification systems to comply with the new regulations. As a result, individual creators on these sites won’t need to take additional steps; the platforms will handle age verification for all visitors.
Running Your Own Site? Age Verification Is a Must
If you operate an independent website featuring adult content, you’re responsible for implementing a compliant age verification system. This involves selecting a trusted verification provider to ensure access is restricted to adults. Non-compliance could result in penalties, so it’s crucial to adopt robust systems that meet legal standards.
Rollout Dates
The Online Safety Act, which includes these age verification requirements, was enacted in October 2023. Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has outlined measures that are expected to come into force early next year. Companies will have a few months to conduct risk assessments and comply with the new rules.
Support from Ofcom
To assist website operators in complying with these new regulations, Ofcom is developing guidance and tools. These resources aim to help site owners implement effective age verification measures, ensuring adherence to legal standards while maintaining user privacy. Staying updated with Ofcom’s publications will be essential for compliance.
Stay Informed and Prepared
These changes aim to create safer online spaces while maintaining access to adult content for verified adults. By leveraging platform-implemented systems and proactively updating your own sites, you can navigate this evolving landscape effectively.
